The Knowledge Work House

“Knowledge Workhouse”

- Knowledge will set us free -

Ten thousand students are to be housed in East Tilbury Workhouse for a five to ten year period.
Research outcomes and information as well as graduating students are sold to industry,
as a result the graduates are debt free and employed.

The University is broken down into Three Houses:
Mucking House with collabortive working method, Tilbury House with non collaboartive, but social interactive work and Orset House with solitary production. The University strives for success in production by pitting them in competition. Each of the houses contains the same five departments of Petro-Chemistry, Port Logistics, Recycling and landfill, Nuclear Power and Waste, and Renewable Energy.Students will reside, on site and would be allocated resources in exchange for their production of new knowledge, innovations, inventions and academic papers.

The students will be able to access a vast libriary of information on the internet, while the University's own guarded archive will form the major source of greater and indepth learning. The project also uses typologies that emerged from furthur drawing experiments to speculate the collaspe of normal relationships between learning, living, sleeping and working environments. The Workstation typology seeks to explore this idea by making virtual learning as the main learning encounter and augmenting sleep and work(production) into the same space, using virtual reality and dream tailoring (the idea that the mind can still process external stimulae during REM Sleep). Each workspace will be equipped with enough capacity to access vast databases from within the university and beyond. It will also be equipped with simulated enviroments e.g nuclear powerstaions, ports, petro-chemical laboratories. These environments allow students to engage with real life possible situations in which they must take decisions. Data from these test simulations would be logged, printed and passed as information to be further researched and scrutinised by students in the upper years. Other forms of production will include data input and analysis, idea proposals, and other forms of production designed to extract new ideas and knowlegde from the students learning experiences.

Once this information is deemed valuable, useful and worthwhile for industry; it is physically archived the within bespoke knowledge silos, of which each of three Houses has five silos relating to its five departments.
The physical archive will grow shelf by shelf, as a visual measure of production and stimulus for competition.

Architecture - as built speculation
Individual workstations are contained within enclosed within individual capsules, these allow student to formulate isolated ideas. The capsules are efficiently stacked in extendable towers to maximise students held within each house, but also allow the clusters of towers that make up the houses to be physically separated on the site, this is intended to generate competition using the theory of "Us and Them".

Student work is processed a number of times, valuable ideas for industry are furthur researched, whereas ideas deemed worthless are incinerated. All work is initially sorted in a circular building known as the Oculus. Work is received by the Oculus through a cable posting system, which allow the students to never leave their Workstaions. All work is submitted on paper so that there is no risk of computer and data hacking and also allows a ritual process that emphasises rate of production, which fuels competition.

  1. Hi there Bongani,

I am inspired by your amazing drawings, especially the drawing with the file name: masterplan@200 C and the series which follows. And I was wondering how these images were created, what is involved in the mechanics of these drawings, are they purely hand based or is there an element of CAD in there?

    Many Thanks,

    Lee

  2. that one is a cad drawing shaded in using different pencils and pens. and the other ones are just pure hand drawn with ink, pen, and pencil on trace.

    many thanks
